FOD (Foreign Object Debris) means any object on runways, taxiways and aprons that does not belong to an aircraft—bolts, washers, maintenance tools, sand, plastic fragments, even bird remains. Ingested at high speed it can damage engine blades and cause in-flight shutdowns; caught in landing gear or tires it can trigger blowouts and runway excursions. Widely cited industry figures put the annual direct cost of FOD to global aviation at billions of dollars in repair, delay and cancellation. ICAO Annex 14 (Aerodrome Design and Operations) requires defined inspection and sweeping frequencies for runways and taxiways so the surface is free of debris that could damage aircraft. Both agree on one point: visual check alone is not enough—mechanized, recordable sweeping is required.

Airfield sweeping depends heavily on the 'window' between flights—usually at night, before the first departure or after the last arrival, to avoid disrupting operations. Major hubs typically schedule a full sweep before first flights and after last flights, plus immediate re-sweeping after construction, de-icing, snow removal or windy dust events. FOD walks by personnel still run on plan, but mechanized sweepers carry the bulk of continuous clearance and sharply cut blind spots and fatigue of manual patrols.

Airside operators favor fully enclosed sweepers with water spray and high-efficiency filtration so the sweeping process itself does not become a new source of contamination.

Mechanized sweepers offer wide cleaning paths (large ride-on units exceed 2 m), high hopper capacity and continuous operation—the main clearing force for runways and aprons. The mature setup is 'magnetic + machine + manual': the sweeper clears the broad area, magnets recover metal, and personnel inspect blind corners on schedule. Versus pure manual work, machine sweeping can replace the continuous output of roughly 20–30 cleaners (experience-based) with traceable records.
