A scrub-dry machine promises one thing: a floor that is ready to walk on immediately. The brush deck loosens soil, but whether the floor is dry depends entirely on a low-cost strip of rubber at the rear — the squeegee blade. When it wears, curls or is simply the wrong compound, the failure chain is predictable: poor water pickup, a residual film, longer dry times, slip risk, and a customer convinced the machine is bad. Gum rubber (tan/beige): soft and conforming, best water pickup on smooth, even indoor floors such as tile, vinyl and sealed epoxy, and the cheapest option. It absorbs oil, which swells and distorts it, and it wears fastest of the four. Linatex-type premium natural rubber (red/pink): markedly better tear and abrasion resistance with useful oil and chemical resistance — the workhorse for warehouses, manufacturing plants and parking structures. Polyurethane (urethane): the strongest chemical and oil resistance and the longest wear life, ideal for rough, uneven or abrasive floors with grit or metal chips; it is the most expensive per blade but often the lowest cost per operating hour. It is stiffer, so it may seal less perfectly on very smooth floors. Neoprene: the original oil-resistant compound, still a cost-effective choice where oil resistance matters but budget is tight — kitchens, fuel stations, service bays.

Aggressive degreasers or solvents — urethane or Linatex, since gum rubber ages fast under chemical attack. Front and rear blades can differ: a harder front blade reduces noise and channels water inward, while a softer rear blade seals better.

1) Visible water trails or lines after the pass. 2) Cracks, gouges or tears in the working edge. 3) Curled, wrinkled or hardened edges from ageing or chemical attack. 4) A rounded edge that has lost its wiping lip. 5) Chatter, squeal or vibration during operation. 6) Gum rubber that has visibly swollen and softened after oil exposure. For 2, 3 and 6, stop rotating and replace outright — a deformed blade cannot be adjusted flat again.

Keep it out of sun and heat: UV and high temperature harden and crack rubber, and spares should be stored cool and dry. Finally, put 'inspect blade' on the daily checklist next to recovery tank and filter — that beats any amount of training.
