The nationwide annual summary released on 17 March 2026 by Professor Kingsly Ambrose at Purdue University reported seven U.S. grain dust explosions in 2025, causing 10 injuries and four fatalities. The count was slightly below the 10-year average of 8.5 and down from nine in 2024, but severity rose sharply: 2024 had two injuries and no deaths. The seven incidents occurred at two commercial grain elevators, one farm-operated elevator, one seed processing facility, one feed mill, one flour mill and one biofuel plant, showing that risk spans the entire grain supply chain. Identified ignition sources included smoldering grain, equipment maintenance work, an overheated bearing and a dust fire; three were unknown. Grain dust fueled five of the seven. The report's conclusion is one sentence: keep the place clean, with no visible settled or suspended dust.

29 CFR 1910.272(j)(1) requires employers to develop and implement a written housekeeping program establishing the frequency and methods best suited to reducing fugitive grain dust on ledges, floors, equipment and other exposed surfaces. (j)(2) adds that grain elevator programs must specifically address accumulations in priority housekeeping areas. (j)(3) limits compressed air blowdown. (j)(4) states that grain and product spills are not counted as fugitive dust, yet the program must still describe procedures for removing them. Note the word written: inspectors ask for the document first and take measurements second. Having no written program is itself a violation, even in a clean facility.

1910.272(j)(2)(i) lists at least three priority areas: floor areas within 35 feet (10.7 m) of inside bucket elevators; floors of enclosed areas containing grinding equipment; and floors of enclosed areas containing grain dryers located inside the facility. All three combine dense ignition sources with high dust levels. Bucket elevators are the most common location of primary explosions, so OSHA also requires that belts purchased after 30 March 1988 be conductive with surface electrical resistance not exceeding 300 megohms, and that elevators carry a motion detection device that shuts the leg down when belt speed drops by no more than 20 percent of normal.

1910.272(j)(2)(ii) requires employers to immediately remove fugitive grain dust whenever accumulations exceed 1/8 inch (0.32 cm) in priority areas, or to demonstrate equivalent protection through the written program. The OSHA appendix confirms the depth is measurable with a ruler or other measuring device anywhere within a priority area; any accumulation above that value with no cleanup initiated is a violation. Oregon OSHA's compliance directive goes further: inspectors take representative measurements and photos across the area, mark them on a plant sketch, and may collect dust samples of up to half a pint per location to verify organic content, moisture and particle size. Looking clean is not a defense; documented measurement is.

1910.272(j)(3) permits compressed air to blow dust from ledges, walls and other areas only when all machinery presenting an ignition source in the area is shut down and all other known potential ignition sources are removed or controlled. Oregon OSHA's directive lists four concurrent conditions under which equipment may keep running during blowdown: the equipment is dust-tight and dust ignition-proof, or intrinsically safe; bearings are effectively monitored; all ignition sources in the area are removed or controlled; and an effective preventive maintenance program is in place. In practice few plants can satisfy and document all four, so the safer route is to convert blowdown to vacuum extraction and retain controlled blowdown only for inaccessible high areas, written into the program.

First, match suction to airflow: cleaning ledges and trusses depends on high vacuum (typically above 20 kPa) rather than high airflow, with margin reserved for long-hose pressure loss. Second, filter cleaning method: continuous operations should use pulse reverse-jet units such as ylbc110 to avoid downtime and secondary dust release from manual shaking. Third, explosion protection: inside classified dust hazard zones, use a correspondingly rated explosion-proof machine such as ylbc030 and request the certificate. Fourth, static control: hose, wand and body must be conductive and reliably grounded, the most commonly overlooked item in grain service. Fifth, duty cycle: three-phase heavy-duty units such as ylbc055 suit multi-shift continuous cleaning without thermal shutdown.

1910.272(l) requires all fabric filter collectors in a pneumatic dust collection system to have a device indicating pressure drop across the filter. Collectors installed after 30 March 1988 must be located outside the facility; or inside an area protected by an explosion suppression system; or inside an area separated from other areas by construction with at least a one-hour fire-resistance rating, adjacent to an exterior wall and vented outside, with vent and ductwork designed to resist deflagration rupture. 1910.272(m) requires regularly scheduled inspections of mechanical and safety control equipment on dryers, grain stream processing equipment, dust collection equipment and bucket elevators. Notably, the OSHA appendix states that filter collectors on portable vacuum cleaners are not covered by paragraph (l), one reason mobile industrial vacuums are the preferred compliance tool.

Build a table with four columns: area, method, frequency, responsible person. Priority areas (within 35 ft of bucket elevators, grinding rooms, indoor dryer enclosures): visual check every shift plus vacuum extraction; clean immediately and log the time whenever 1/8 inch is exceeded. Conveyor galleries, pits and belt undersides: vacuum weekly. Silo tops, trusses, and ledges above lighting and piping: monthly, using high-reach vacuum wands, with controlled blowdown only under the stated conditions. Yard roads and receiving pit surroundings: daily sweeping with a fully enclosed sweeper such as ylba5300 to stop dust being tracked indoors. File all records together with the preventive maintenance log so everything can be produced in one request during an inspection.
