Cleaning conditions across the Middle East and GCC differ fundamentally from Europe or East Asia. Summer ambient temperatures routinely exceed 40C (104F). Sandstorms deposit fine sand on every indoor and outdoor surface continuously. Coastal cities such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dammam stack high humidity on top of the heat. When these three variables act together, equipment designed for temperate climates fails in three directions at once: accelerated battery degradation, rapid filter clogging, and plastics turning brittle under UV plus thermal cycling. UAE municipal regulation has also tightened, requiring street cleaning equipment to capture dust rather than disperse it, while water conservation is a stated national priority. Both requirements now appear directly in government and large-owner procurement clauses.

This is the single most common sourcing mistake in the Gulf. LiFePO4 cells typically discharge from -20C to 60C, which looks generous. The charging window is far narrower, usually 0C to 45C, with an optimal band of 20C to 45C. NMC chemistry is stricter still, with an optimal band of roughly 15C to 35C. In practice, a scrubber rated to discharge at 60C will simply refuse to charge inside a 47C non-air-conditioned warehouse. The machine is not broken; the BMS is protecting the pack. Buyers who only test discharge during factory acceptance discover this in July. Require the supplier to state discharge, charge and storage temperature ranges separately in the technical file rather than a single vague operating temperature.

Thermal damage to lithium cells is quantifiable. The widely cited rule of thumb is that every 10C above 25C can cut cycle life by up to half. A LiFePO4 pack rated at 6,000 cycles at 25C may deliver only around 3,000 cycles if operated continuously at 35C. Sustained exposure at 60C can cause up to 20 percent capacity loss within a single year, against roughly 4 percent annual loss at 25C. Self-discharge also rises sharply with temperature. On safety, thermal runaway onset is around 270C for LiFePO4 versus roughly 150C to 210C for NMC. That margin, not price, is the core reason Gulf projects should default to LiFePO4.

Most equipment failures on Middle East sites happen during charging, not during cleaning. Warehouse mezzanines, basement plant rooms and outdoor tool sheds can reach 45C to 50C on a summer afternoon, well outside the charging window. Four practical measures apply. First, provide a dedicated charging room with air conditioning or at minimum forced mechanical ventilation, targeting under 35C. Second, schedule charging for cooler night hours. Third, cap charging at 90 percent state of charge when ambient exceeds 40C, to avoid stacking high SOC on high temperature. Fourth, specify a BMS with real-time temperature monitoring, automatic current derating and high-temperature cutoff, and write the trigger thresholds into the contract. Ventilation and fire requirements apply as they would anywhere else.

Sand damages cleaning equipment differently from industrial dust. Sand grains are large, hard and highly mobile. They fill small-area filter cartridges within days, collapsing suction, while abrading bearings, impellers and hose linings. Key specification points for sandy environments include a metal pre-filter screen or cyclonic pre-separation stage to drop coarse sand before the main filter, a main cartridge with generous filtration area and washable construction, wide airflow ducts because narrow ducts will clog, solid rubber wheels on sealed bearings instead of cheap plastic wheels that quickly go out of round, and UV-stable engineering plastics for housings and handles. Ask suppliers to state filter surface area in square metres and confirm in writing whether the cartridge is washable.

Treating a scrubber dryer as the first pass is the most common operating error in sandy environments. Water scarcity has moved conservation from a nice-to-have to a scored requirement.
