The one-line difference
A mop: dip in solution → scrub by hand → floor must dry, and the dirty mop carries germs back into the clean water, redepositing them across ~35% of surfaces. A scrubber: spray → scrub → recover dirty water instantly, removing ~98% of surface contaminants in three stages — walk away on a dry floor.
Efficiency data
Per ISSA 612, a 16-oz mop head covers ~1,700 sq ft/hr; a 20-inch walk-behind scrubber ~16,000 sq ft/hr (about 9x). One operator with a walk-behind scrubs ~13,000 sq ft/hr; a ride-on exceeds 100,000; a mop only 4,000–5,000. Floor care can be up to 80% of a cleaning team's time.
Hygiene: why mops get 'dirtier as you go'
A mop carries dirty water back to the bucket and then to other areas; a scrubber has separate clean and recovery tanks so clean water never recirculates. The closed three-stage loop removes ~98% of surface contaminants and avoids cross-contamination.
Safety: dry floor = shorter slip window
Same-level falls are the costliest routine claim class; residual mop water lingers for hours — a classic exposure. A scrubber's squeegee recovers water instantly, shrinking the slip window from 'hours' to 'refill/transition' moments. Ideal for in-hours cleaning (retail, hospital corridors).
Labor hours and cost
20k sq ft per night: mop ~5 hrs vs scrubber ~45 min. 10k sq ft daily: 2–3 staff cost $20k+/yr; one scrubber operator ~$5k–$7k. Sites over 50k sq ft save $120–$180/day in labor.
When a mop is still right
Under 15,000 sq ft or fragmented rooms, stairs/restroom edges, and spot-cleaning: mops are flexible, zero-training, near-zero capital. Rule of thumb: if you clean daily AND ≥15,000 sq ft, OR wages >$15/hr, OR need daily disinfection → upgrade to a scrubber.
Selection and labor shortage
Automated/autonomous scrubbers let operators stand upright and robots work alone, easing strain and hiring pressure; lithium batteries are maintenance-free. Compact walk-behind for small spaces, ride-on or robot for large areas.
